Car Crash

*Hypothetical scenario*

17-year-old charged with impaired driving has caused a serious car crash at the intersection of Lagimodiere Boulevard and Fermor Avenue.

On October 19th, 2021, shortly after 3:30 a.m., a Pontiac Sunfire was hit into the front field of the Mint in the southwest corner by a Jeep Wrangler.

The Jeep sat in the middle of Lagimodiere, with the front end smashed.

The Pontiac’s driver-side door was dented in, firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extract the driver, identified as Gregory Lester, 48, husband to Veronica Lester-Smith and father of Joshua and Liam.

Police administered a breath screening test to the Jeep driver, honour roll student at St. Paul’s High School, and son of Winnipeg mayor.

Paramedics put Lester into the ambulance and drove away, no sirens going.

Detective Dave MacInnes said, “Looks like the kid was speeding. He’s blown way over. And we got beer bottles rolling all around the floor of the Jeep. We’re taking him into custody and he’ll be remanded. The other driver looks bad, not sure he’s going to make it. He may succumb to his injuries.”

At 10 a.m. this morning, police issued a report saying Lester died in hospital due to injuries and the 17-year-old driver is being charged with impaired driving causing death.

The 17-year-old driver is to appear in court this morning for a bail hearing.

He potentially faces a life sentence, if he is tried as an adult.

Neither St. Paul’s High School nor Lester’s family will comment at this time.
