The snow fell hard as we trudged our way to the frozen Assiniboine River.

The dark sky was lit with stars, guiding our path to the ice. The winter air bit our faces as we laced up our skates

and wobbled our way down to the river.

I stepped onto the slippery surface, my knees shaking from the frozen ground beneath me.

I staggered my way down the ice, holding tightly to my friend’s arms, laughing so hard I couldn’t breathe.

The sky grew darker, and the temperature dropped further, the sweet smell of mini donuts

beckoned us to sit inside.

We ate and drank around a table while we talked into the night.

No matter where life takes us, I know we’ll reconnect where the two rivers meet.
